Laser Doppler Velocimetry (or LDV) has been a long-proven method for accurately measuring the length and speed of moving products. Take our LaserSpeed Pro gauge for instance. It has been tackling the most challenging industrial applications for over 25 years. From measuring the length and speed of metal products in hot, hostile processing environments to measuring wire and cable, pipe and tube, and flat products such as building materials, paper, film, nonwovens and more – LaserSpeed Pro is a proven performer. And, it executes these measurements with incredible accuracy (+/-0.03%).
So, with this type of serious “street cred” you would think the standard LDV method can be used to measure almost anything. Well, yes that’s true for some applications -- but not for all. Consider the production of long, continuous cylindrical products such as bare or insulated wire, metal rod or even small pipes and tubes. If these long products are bouncing around during production because they are not well-guided, and move off-axis or out of the measurement range, it’s very difficult for LDV-based gauges to keep the laser on the product’s surface. This results in hard-to-obtain and unreliable length and speed measurements. (Remember, the laser needs to be present onto the product’s surface 100% of the time and reflected-back to the gauge without skipping a beat in order to accurately capture measurements.)
The Clever R&D Team at NDC Technologies Did It Again
Never one to shy away from a challenge, the engineering team at NDC Technologies behind the LaserSpeed Pro product family did a deep dive into the application and looked at creative ways to innovate the LDV measurement technique. After some serious R&D, and a series of bench studies and live trials, they developed a new product with a proprietary optical engine unlike any other measurement system on the market. We proudly call this innovation the LaserSpeed Pro M Series. And it’s truly a remarkable solution that provides highly reliable, robust length and speed measurements of small, bouncing and unguided cylindrical moving products.
Manufacturers Realize Numerous Benefits
Before the LaserSpeed Pro M Series, traditional LDV gauges were never truly successful with measuring bouncing, unguided moving products – and fell short of controlling critical process functions. Unreliable measurements were costing manufacturers a significant amount of money due to product give-away, waste from scrap, loss in productivity, process downtime and other conditions. Our new LaserSpeed Pro M Series gauge now solves this tough, age-old measurement problem, enabling manufacturers to effectively control product speed and process functions in the most challenging production applications with the greatest repeatable accuracy. The payback is significant.
If you’re finding it hard to measure small, bouncing and unguided cylindrical products, look no further and check out our LaserSpeed Pro M Series gauge. Our team of application specialists are ready to roll up their sleeves and help you.
